Inquisitive Interviewer: Who is Pate and Birdie and where does that name come from?

Denise: Good Question!  I am Pate and Birdie!  Just me - one person.  Not me and a bird.  And not me and someone named Pate (although I nicknamed myself 'Birdie' for awhile..... it didn't stick.)  I hand-dye my yarn solo....in my home. The names 'Pate' and 'Birdie' come from an ancestry.com kick that I was on once.....I researched my family genealogy and while digging around, I discovered that my great-great grandparents names' were Pate and Birdie.  Such fun names! I also don't have a lot of information about my dad's side of the family, so this was an exciting find for me!  Did I get my love of knitting, crocheting, and all things fiber from this side of the family? Maybe. Maybe Birdie was a great knitter......?  I like to imagine that she was.

Inquisitive Interviewer: OK, so you are the person behind Pate and Birdie.  Who are you?

Denise: Ohhhhh who am I?  Also a very good question!  The answer could get very complex, but I'll just keep it simple.  My name is Denise (but you can call me Birdie! haha) . I live in Springfield, Illinois. I have a husband and I have 3 children. I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher.  I knit, I crochet, I dye yarn.

Inquisitive Interviewer: Yes, tell us about dyeing yarn.......how long have you been doing it and what got you interested in it?

Birdie: I actually just started dyeing yarn about 6 months ago.  I started with an interest in natural dyeing because I love natural colors and I'm kind of a drawn to all things natural and simple....(perhaps to offset my complex self!). I experimented with natural dyes and I enjoyed that whole process. Then, I started learning about acid dyes. I learned that they are not any more dangerous than natural dyes and that you can achieve the same colors plus a lot more with them.  My learning process has been slower than I'd like since I have 2 teaching jobs and a family, but it has been so fun!  I love color and I love yarn....so dyeing yarn is where its at for me!

Inquisitive Interviewer: Your yarn label is so cute!  Tell us about that.

D̶e̶n̶i̶s̶e̶ Birdie:  I love my yarn label so much!  My youngest daughter, Fiona, drew it for me.  I toyed around with creating my own logo on the computer, but Fiona's drawing is so much better.... and it depicts my values of keeping things simple and homemade.  I dream of having an all handmade wardrobe..... I might jump on that bandwagon soon..... my yarn label is super special to me.

Inquisitive Interviewer: Speaking of values, what is Pate and Birdie all about?  I mean, I know you dye beautiful yarn....but as a company, what does Pate and Birdie stand for?

Birdie: Well, I don't know if my hand-dyed yarn company really stands for anything in particular...I know that I love to create handmade things....I like them to be a little quirky....simple and uncomplicated....I love feelings and meaningful ideas... and so if I can inspire someone to create something handmade with my yarn - something that they will love - then I'm happy!
